Research Participant FAQs

Who can participate in a study?

Each study has specific criteria for participation. In general, school aged children can participate in most studies.

What can I expect when my child participates in a study?

When you arrive at the lab, you and your child will be introduced to our research team. Then, we will talk about what will happened during the study and allow you to ask any questions. If you and your child decide to proceed, you will sign an informed consent form for your child to participate. We will make sure your child feels as comfortable and safe as possible in every step of the research process! At any point in the study, your child has the right to opt out of participation if they do not wish to continue.

How long will participation take?

This depends on the study your child is participating in. We clearly state the time commitment before you agree to participate.

What are the benefits of participating?

When your child participates in research, they are helping researchers learn valuable information that can be used to benefit other children in the future! Your child can also learn about the scientific process and what a modern science laboratory in an academic setting looks.

Are there any risks of my child participating in research?

Each study has its own set of risks. We will always share these risks with you before you decide whether to give informed consent. Although risks are generally minimal, your child is never obligated to participate.

When does the study take place?

If you decide to participate in a study, we will work with you to find a time that is convenient for you and your family. We want to accommodate what works best for you and we can be flexible.

Where can I park if I participate in a study?

You will be able to park for free in the Marquette Occupational Therapy building parking lot located at 1700 West Wells St.

How will I be compensated? Will I get paid?

All participants will be compensated for their participation. The amount and form of compensation differs between studies and is proportional to any risks involved in participation. The participants will also receive one Marquette University souvenir!

What is the research going to be used for?

The research will be used to learn about how children’s movement develops and how the brain and nervous system are involved in movement. This information is important for evidence-based therapies used by physical and occupational therapists for treating movement problems.

Will I receive my child’s assessment results?

Yes, you may ask to see results and data collected from your child during their visit.

Can I hear about the results of the study?

Yes, participants can access study updates and results on the Pediatric Movement and Neuroscience Lab website. When the study is completed and results published, we will send a summary of this to you .

Will the data collected from my child at the visit be confidential?

Personal information about your child will be kept private and will not be accessible by anyone except lab personnel. When study results are published, your child’s name or other identifying information will not be included. Any videos taken of your child during the study will only be seen by trained researchers and stored securely in the lab.

Can I stay with my child during the course of the study?

Yes, you may stay in the room while your child participates in the study. However, if your child is comfortable with you leaving, you do not need to stay.

Can I bring other children with me?

Yes, we have a space for other children to play and toys available. If needed, we can also arrange for a research assistant to be available to supervise other children.
